This book vividly portrays the adventurous life of Franz Seiner, born in 1874 in Feldbach in eastern Styria, as well as the political and social situation of the very turbulent period from the late 19th century and the early 20th century up to Seiner’s unexpected death in 1929.
As editor of several daily newspapers, he travelled abroad early and, as a volunteer, experienced the Boer War around 1900 in southern Africa. From 1903 he conducted research under the most difficult conditions, often at risk of his life, on a secret assignment for the German colonial authorities in German South‑West Africa (Namibia), evidence of which can still be found today in German and Austrian archives and museums.
A new field of research opened up for Seiner in Albania, where, above all with the first proper census in the years 1917/18, he achieved a unique accomplishment with lasting effect. In his last decade of life, Franz Seiner, alongside his political engagement, always also endeavoured to inspire his fellow countrymen at home with enthusiasm for distant countries.
