The compilation provides an overview of the former and present appearance and the historical development of the castle complex situated high above the village of Ramingstein in the Lungau, State of Salzburg/Austria. The harmoniously composed ensemble, which appears as a 13th‑century knight’s castle, consists of a ruin, probably from the 12th century—formerly the hous ze Ramungestein—and an extensive addition built at the beginning of the 20th century. General remarks as well as castle legends and fairy tales complement the chronicle. The function of this impressive complex has varied greatly: once the seat of the mining administration in what was formerly an important mining district and a toll station at a provincial border, the old castle fell into decay from the middle of the 16th century onward. At the end of the 19th century Count Szàpàry acquired the ruin and expanded it with extensive additions into a large residential castle. Since 1949 the castle has been used by the Protestant Youth of Austria, which acquired it as owner in 1972, for leisure stays, family and youth visits. The eventful history of the castle up to the present day is excellently documented and illustrated with photos, images and sketches.
